For the success of a proper service The Operative Station 118 Has to understand WHERE and WHY.
For this reason, the person who is calling the station is asked simple questions.
The identification of the gravity of the situation actually allows the activation of the aid tools with proper assistance capabilities, adapted to the hereof intervention.
Only the delivery of some precise information from those calling the Station can lead to an effective and efficient sanitary response. To give complete and thorough information doesn’t mean a waste of precious time, but on the contrary. Many times this could mean a lifesaving.
WHAT DOES THE SUCCESS CONSIST OF?
It is essential for the Operative Station 118 to understand where the intervention is needed. The precise identification of the location of the event is actually the first basic element which determines a successful result of the intervention.
The number of the calling person is always visualized.
The Stations have the possibility, in most of the requests, to have the immediate information upon the localization of the telephone landline. In the case of a call coming from a cell phone, its localization is still imprecise.
The specification of the location of the calling person with regards to the scene of the event is absolutely necessary!

CAUSE AND SUCCESS
"Why am I asked so many questions when I call for an ambulance? I do not need somebody to waste my time! Why are they interested in so much information? I just need an ambulance and that’s all!
This way of thinking is related to the fact that all the ambulances are the same and they serve to the fast transportation of the wounded patients, of the sick people to the hospital whereby the needed medical assistance will be found.
IT IS NOT TRUE!
It is not true that all the ambulance services are the same: within Bologna territory there are found:
- ambulances dedicated to non-emergency transportation, which do not have either the medical apparatus or the qualified personnel assistance for the help of the patients with more serious situations
- ambulances, with volunteer or employed personnel, prepared and professionally trained for aid situations
- ambulances with doctors on board, capable to deal with more serious cases
- in case of identifying the necessity, there is another possibility of intervention by helicopter, with the support of Emilia Romagna Region.
It is not true that it is enough to transport the patient quickly to the hospital. There are patients who cannot find the needed level of assistance but in hospitals properly endowed and these hospitals are not necessarily found in their neighbourhood.
It is not true that the assistance can be offered only in the hospital but it can and must start immediately if the patient’s condition is very serious.
